SCHEDULE FOR DAY ONE
OF A TWO DAY ANIMATED-LITERACYル WORKSHOP
Part 1:
An overview of current research in reading, language development, attention, memory, and brain development is presented. This research helps to explain why some children develop oral and written language skills more easily than others and how teachers can use the universal sequence of language development to help all children experience more success and have fun learning to read and write. The critical elements for success in written and oral language will be discussed.
Break
Part 2:
Strategies and materials for developing phonological awareness, vocabulary, and listening comprehension will be discussed and modeled. The activities will incorporate childrenメs literature, storytelling, gestures, and sound manipulation and blending activities in a playful, interactive environment. Gestures will be introduced to teach and reinforce each of the sounds needed to read and write in English.
Lunch
Part 3
Additional activities for developing phonological awareness, listening comprehension, and vocabulary will be introduced and modeled. Activities for introducing and reviewing an alphabet character will be modeled and discussed. Adaptations for different grade levels and abilities will be presented.
Break
Part 4:
Guided drawing and labeling activities that provide a sequence for introducing
sounds and decodable labels will be modeled. Through drawing and labeling,
participants will learn how to teach and reinforce segmentation, blending,
letter recognition, letter pattern recognition, and printing skills.
The use of mixed up, cut and paste sentences that combine high frequency words with decodable words from the drawing and labeling lessons will be discussed and modeled. The mixed up sentences develop both word recognition skills and reading comprehension. Pattern song activities that develop both oral and written language skills and concepts will be introduced. The pattern songs move from sound manipulation and substitution activities to word substitution activities. The songs then advance from substituting single words to forming and using both noun and verb phrases. Finally, the pattern songs are used to introduce and reinforce the meaning and use of high frequency words including prepositions and pronouns. Vocabulary development, literature, and the use of drawing and labeling activities are integrated with the pattern song activities.

Note: Day two will review and expand on concepts presented in day one. Additional time will be provided to meet individual needs and answer questions.
Part 1:
A review of the gestures and sounds of the Animated-Alphabet characters is provided. Additional songs and activities for developing higher levels of phonemic and phonological awareness including segmentation, blending, and rhyming will be modeled and discussed. Additional brain, language, and reading research will be integrated with the activities to increase the participantsメ understanding of reading and language development.
Break
Part 2:
Drawing activities that move students from labeling with single
words to labeling with noun phrases and verb phrases will be
modeled and discussed. The building and use of word walls &
charts of adjectives, verbs, and adverbs from literature that has
been read aloud to the students will be modeled. The use of
similes to describe nouns and verbs will be introduced through
literature and reinforced through the labeling process. Participants
will learn how to make individual drawing books for independent
drawing, labeling, and writing activities.
Lunch
Part 3:
Activities for using pattern song frames and puzzles to develop reading fluency and writing skills will be discussed and modeled. Word substitution activities that develop an understanding of word function, sentence construction, and paragraph writing will be modeled and discussed. Participants will also explore ways of integrating reading and writing with math and other subject areas.
Break
Part 4:
The use of manipulatives to reinforce phonological awareness, decoding, word recognition skills, and reading comprehension will be modeled and discussed. A plan for integrating other reading materials including basal and leveled readers with manipulatives and the Animated-Literacy lessons will be modeled and discussed. Advanced word substitution activities will be discussed and modeled. Time will also be set aside to discuss pacing and grade level expectations.
Please note. This schedule offers a general overview of a two day Animated-Literacy workshop. However, no two workshops are exactly the same. This schedule may be modified as necessary to meet the needs of each group of participants.

Description:
Participants will learn to build learning communities in which all members: 1) work together to facilitate every studentメs learning 2) are encouraged to participate and do their best 3) feel valued and appreciated and 4) feel safe and supported. This classroom climate fosters a multi-tiered system of support. This workshop is based on "The Community Building Series" created by the Center for Research on Learning at KU. A book, "Talking Together," is included with this workshop.
Description:
Discover which teaching strategies actually raise student achievement and by how much. These are the evidence-based practices that every knowledgable educator should be familiar with. Participants will examine the nine categories of research-based instructional strategies identified by MCREL that maximize student learning. They will learn guiding principles for using the strategies and gain practical examples and tools to begin using the strategies right away. This training is a good choice for teachers desiring to improve their classroom practice as well as district curriculum/professional development leaders looking for ways to improve instruction across the curriculum. Buildings participating in multi-tiered systems and KLN will also find this presentation very useful. MCREL's research and strategies are incorporated into the Instruction component of multi-tiered systems, the MCREL Walkthrough process, and the KLN PALSS Observation process. Participants will receive the book Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement by Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock (ASCD 2001).
