Project Alternative
Program Description:
Project Alternative is a cooperative effort between Greenbush, Tri County, and ANW special service providers, to provide an educational alternative for school aged special education students. This school is for students who exhibit disruptive behaviors that may cause them to drop out or be placed out of school.
The philosophy of the program is to teach students to be responsible for their own behavior and that socially acceptable behavior yields positive results with control and predictability in their life. This Positive Behavioral approach is designed to not “control” students but to engineer the educational environment for students to develop and utilize their own internal controls. All behavioral and academic decisions for students are data driven
Services we Offer:
Project Alternative was established in 1992 and currently serves students in two separate age settings ranging from 5th to 12th grade. The major goal of the program is for the student to correct their antisocial behavior, to remediate any academic deficiencies, to recover needed credits and return to their home attendance area to graduate. Virtual Performance Learning is utilized throughout the program to facilate individual learning and assistance in academic remediation.
When a student is transferred back to their home district, the placement is “warranted.” This means that PA is providing assurance that the student will exhibit acceptable behavior. If the principal of the receiving school feels the placement is not working, the student returns back to PA for more work.
How does this benefit schools:
Project Alternative provides school districts an option to serve students who are not responding to traditional school efforts because of antisocial behavior. PA provides academic and social remediation until the student can be safely and effectively returned to their home school.
