Parents as Teachers

Program Description:
Parents as Teachers is an early learning program designed to provide practical and timely information to all families including single parents, first-time parents and expectant parents. The program is available to anyone who has a child under the age of three and lives within a participating school district.

Services we offer:

  • Personal Visits - Parent Educators share age-appropriate child development information, address parenting concerns, and engage the family in activities.
  • Group Connections - Group Connections provide opportunities to share information about parenting issues and child development.
  • Screenings - Annual developmental, health, vision and hearing screenings provide for early identification of developmental delays and health, vision, and hearing problems.
  • Playgroups - Playgroups give parents the opportunity to join with other parents for a play time that provides a variety of activities that enhance all areas of development.
  • Resource Network - Parent educators help families identify and connect with needed resources.
  • Subscriptions - Parents receive subscriptions to the monthly PAT newsletter and Parent and Child magazine.

How does this benefit schools:
The early years of a child's life are critical for optimal development and Parents as Teachers provides the information, support and encouragement that parents need.

  • Parents as Teachers curriculum is based on reliable and current research in the areas of child development and neuroscience.
  • Parents as Teachers provides opportunities to maximize the impact that parents have as their children’s first and most influential teachers. Because the early years of a child’s life are critical for optimal development and provides the foundation for success in school and life, working with parents of very young children is an opportunity to promote children’s readiness for school and sets children on the path for school success.
  • Additionally, by providing regular child screening that focuses on developmental progress regarding cognitive, language, social-emotional, and motor skills, as well as identification vision/hearing/health issues, children with possible developmental delays and vision/hearing/health issues are identified early, and referred to further services when needed.
