Southeast Kansas Education Service Center - Greenbush
Science Center

Program Description:

The Abernathy Science Education Center serves as a valuable tool for students, teachers, and community members. In 2006, the Science Education Center received an expansion, which provided increased student opportunities in the field of biosciences. Bioscience is a broad industry that impacts very specific sectors of the Kansas economy, and the Science Center has a tremendously strong bioscience industry in Kansas with strengths in animal health, human life science, industrial biomass, and plant science. To accommodate the growing demand of bioscience jobs, we are focusing our efforts on learning experiences and labs that meet the Kansas State Science Standards while capturing the interest and challenging the capabilities of our students. In addition, a specific bioscience connection has been incorporated into our labs. Areas include biomedicine, soil biotechnology, and even labs exploring bioenergy, utilizing the onsite wind turbine. The Funding for the Science Education Center comes from competitive state and federal grants and membership fees.

Services we offer:
The Science Education Center is comprised of multiple facilities on the campus of the Education Service Center at Greenbush, which include the PSU-Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory, Mission Space Station, a simulated rainforest, wind turbine, paleontology dig, and the Greenbush Digital Theater. Each component is designed to allow hands-on learning experiences and labs. Other services that are provided by the Science Education Center are:

  • Professional development opportunities for teachers
  • Programs and tours to community groups
  • Technology integration as part of each learning experience/lab
  • Free monthly public programs at the PSU-Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory
  • Summer camps and academies for area youth

How does this benefit schools:
The Abernathy Science Education Center assists schools by offering labs and experiences that otherwise aren’t offered in their own school or district.
