Vision Services

Program Description:
Vision services are provided for low vision, blind and deaf-blind students, age birth to age 21 who reside in the nine-county area of Southeast Kansas. The vision staff consists of two certified teachers of the visually impaired and a paraeducator who provide both direct and support services at school or in the child’s home. 

 

Services we offer:

Direct Services

  • Improve eye tracking, scanning, shift of gaze and eye-hand coordination
  • Incorporate other senses to enhance learning
  • Teach the use of magnification devices or low vision aids
  • Develop pre-Braille reading and writing skills
  • Use special computer hardware and software to enlarge text and graphic materials
  • Teach visual cueing and tactile communication with objects in the environment
  • Develop pre-caning mobility skills

Support Services

  • Home programming with parents of newly identified blind or low vision children
  • Collaborating with regular and special education teachers on classroom adaptations
  • Coordinating orientation and mobility training provided by certified O&M consultants
  • Obtaining large print and Braille materials
  • Acquiring and teaching students to use assistive technology such as print magnification equipment
  • Registering students with appropriate agencies so that they receive available services and equipment
  • Conducting functional vision and learning media assessments
  • Screening the vision of infants and special needs children

Vision services are part of a cooperative partnership with the 4 area special education agencies which ensures the efficient delivery of specialized educational opportunities that would not otherwise be available or affordable with low incidence services.

Pricing Information:
Fees for vision services are covered through the child’s school district if they reside in the nine county area.
