Parents and Early Childhood Education
Providing children with the best possible start in life is a critically important goal of the Greenbush in its service to parents, schools, and other community agencies. The most cutting edge technology available assists Greenbush Educational Audiologists identify hearing loss among infants, children, and students that can impede development and learning. Infant and Toddler Programs, Preschools, and Parents As Teachers work closely with parents to assist children enter school ready to learn.

Abernathy Science Education Center
Abernathy Science Education Center provides hands-on, inquiry-based science programs for preschool through high school students, teachers, and community members. All programming is aligned to state standards. Facilities include a simulated tropical rainforest, archaeology dig, greenhouse, learning gardens, computer lab, distance learning classroom, 40 acre outdoor learning site, wetland, restored tallgrass prairie, and science classroom with numerous scientific collections

Audiology
Audiology services are provided by four licensed educational audiologists. Services consist of early detection/intervention, audiological evaluation, academic/classroom support and community outreach/leadership.

Testing is performed primarily at our Greenbush facility, as well as in schools and home-based settings. In keeping with our goal of early detection of hearing loss before three months of age and early intervention before six months, audiological evaluation and support services are available in conjunction with other early childhood programs serving the birth to three population. Each year, approximately 1500 children from birth to 21 years are seen for audiological testing. Children are referred by school nurses, teachers/related school personnel, physicians, and hospitals as well as other community agencies. Parents are encouraged to schedule an appointment if they have hearing concerns.

Home-based services are provided to families of deaf and hard of hearing infants and toddlers, and consist of parent education and audiological support.

Deaf Education
Educational services for deaf and hard of hearing children in our service area are served through various program combinations. The professional education staff consists of three teachers of the deaf, a speech pathologist, and members of the audiology team. In addition, there are 14 interpreters who facilitate communication between the student, teachers and classmates while they are attending school in the regular education setting.

Services include: itinerant services by a teacher of the deaf, direct services within a resource room, specialized speech and language services, and comprehensive audiological support.

Tiny-K Early Intervention Services
Parents and professionals sometimes feel that a child may have a need for special care and education in his or her early years. The programs in the tiny-k network provide free evaluations of infants and toddlers ages birth to three who received no prenatal care; had a difficult birth; had medical complications before or after birth; were born prematurely or have a very low birth weight; were born to teenage mothers or mothers over 40; have genetic disorders or birth defects; have been diagnosed as failure to thrive; have feeding or sucking difficulties; have suspected vision or hearing disorders or a history of recurrent otitis media; have a family history of developmental difficulties; or are suspected of having a developmental delay.

Parents As Teachers
The Parents as Teachers program provides families of young children ages prenatal to three comprehensive services that focuses on child development and parenting. Parent Educators utilize the nationally recognized Born to Learnル researched-based curriculum as their provide personal visits, group meetings, screenings, and resource network services.

The program is open to all families in a participating district and is provided free of charge to families.

Vision Impaired
Services for visually impaired students in the nine county area are provided through vision consultants and a certified orientation and mobility instructor. The consultants provide large print books, magnification and illumination aids, and other audio equipment to help the visually impaired student adapt to his regular classroom setting. VI students begin instruction in typing and computer skills at the elementary level. For those students who are totally blind, services include braille instruction, as well as orientation and mobility training.

Approximately 40 students a year participate in this program that assists them in being successful in regular education classrooms within their home districts. These students who previously would have been served through the Kansas State School for the Blind, are now able to live at home and acquire the skills they need to function independently. The vision program has focused on keeping up to date on the technological advances in the field.

Four Year Old Preschool
Four Year Old At-Risk preschools are developed in conjunction with local school districts with the goal of providing school readiness opportunities to enhance young children?s cognitive, language, social/ emotional, physical, cultural and aesthetic development.
