In addition to providing academic instruction to our gifted learners, we also provide social/emotional character development (SECD), and leadership instructional lessons. Generally, we provide this training to students in small group settings, once per month.
The National Association of Gifted Children’s (NAGC) Position Statement on character development of gifted students states that, “NAGC strongly recommends that curriculum geared to helping gifted children and adolescents with social, emotional, and career development be part of gifted education programming both in and outside of the regular classroom.”
Starting in the 2016-2017 school year, Greenbush will begin to leadership training and character development instruction to students in the innovative gifted education program. The curriculum for these leadership sessions will be presented in an interactive format; students will be exposed to “near-life” scenarios in which they can safely rehearse appropriate interpersonal interactions.
The schedule for these sessions is located below.
