Purpose: The Early Childhood Cadre is a year-long learning opportunity and networking experience for early childhood practitioners. Participants will have access to enriching professional development and relevant-to-the-field collaboration regarding best practices and practical tools to support early learners. The cadre offers three in-person events and optional virtual support throughout the year.

This workshop-style training is intended for special educators, administrators, classroom teachers, school counselors, and social workers. Participants will experience a combination of diirect instruction, reflection, and hands-on application. Information shared will include strategies for looking deeper, beyond what a child is trying to “get or avoid”, to assess the underlying skills that need to be built, comparisons of how brain-based, skill-focused FBA’s & BSP’s more effectively address the impacts of trauma than traditional models, and a process to include proactive regulation as part of a support plan to help a child become more accessible for intervention.
Participants are encouraged to bring a current Behavior Support Plan to utilize during the event.
Teaching Social Skills to Youth using the Boys Town Model

This workshop explores the science behind using the Boys Town Model to teach social skills to students. We will discuss social competencies, define proactive and corrective teaching practices, and work in small groups. Participants will have an opportunity to apply the skills presented in this hand-on session, and create lessons on how to teach the skills to take back to the classroom.
This session is aimed at arming school personnel with the skills needed to identify social skill deficits, plan for social skill instruction, and support students with diverse social, emotional, and learning needs. General education teachers, special education teachers, related service providers, counselors, social workers, and any district personnel with an interest in learning how to teach social skills in schools are invited to attend!

This training session will focus on the prevalence of drug use in society and the observable signs and symptoms associated with impairing levels of those substances. Attendees will be presented with information that can be used to determine whether people they interact with professionally might be consuming drugs or whether they could be suffering from a medical condition mimicking drug impairment. A discussion related to the ongoing fentanyl crisis will be included in this presentation.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to those who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.
After the course, you’ll be able to:
• Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges
• Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges
• Understand how to interact with a person in crisis
• Know how to connect a person with help
• Use self-care tools and techniques
Learn how to respond with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE):
- • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- • Listen non-judgmentally
- • Give reassurance and information
- • Encourage appropriate professional help
- • Encourage self-help and other support strategies
Presenters will be from DCCCA in Lawrence, Kansas and are certified trainers of the Mental Health First Aid curriculum.

This workshop is for classroom teachers, special educators, building administrators, school counselors, social workers, paraeducators, and anyone who wants to know more about why escalation happens and what you can do to prevent it through your interactions. Participants will take a deeper look at the factors that lead to escalation in the school setting, and discover universal proactive de-escalation strategies. Tools for use during a conflict, and post-conflict supports for students and teachers will be shared.

Participants will learn how to establish and sustain comprehensive school safety efforts that attend to both physical and psychological safety. The workshop addresses critical components needed to develop, exercise, and evaluate safety and crisis teams and plans and conduct building vulnerability assessments. The model also integrates school personnel and community provider roles in providing school-based crisis preparedness and response activities. Additional topics addressed also include media/social media, communication, reunification, students with special needs, culture, and memorials. After this workshop, participants will be better prepared to improve their school’s climate, student resilience, and crisis response capabilities of school personnel. With updated research and strategies, this workshop makes a clear connection between ongoing crisis prevention, mitigation, protection, and response. PREPaRE workshops offer NASP-approved CPD’s (7) for completion of this professional development.

Bullying & Social Media

It is inevitable that most youth will use social media and increase the chances of experiences related to bullying. Instead of trying to convince youth not to use social media, why not change our approach as adults? This presentation will focus on ways that adults can increase youth safety on social media and how to support youth who experience challenges on social media.
Lydia is a Program Coordinator at DCCCA, coordinating substance misuse prevention initiatives in Douglas County and supporting prevention efforts across Kansas. Lydia is a certified trainer in Sources of Strength Suicide Prevention, Mental Health First Aid, and Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Sources of Strength is an upstream prevention program that aims to ultimately reduce suicide risk among youth. Through strategic messaging campaigns and building connectedness, this program also addresses risk factors for substance misuse, bullying, dating violence, and other risks. In this session participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of SOS and what it would take to implement the program in a school setting.
