De-Escalation 102: A Deeper Look at De-escalation (Part 2) – Lawrence
Pre-requisite for this course is De-Escalation 101: Understanding the Nervous System.
Building on the foundational concepts from De-Escalation 101, this session delves into the systemic and environmental factors that contribute to student escalation. Participants will explore universal proactive de-escalation strategies, practical tools for responding during moments of distress, and post-escalation strategies to support students and staff. Through reflection and discussion, educators will develop a deeper understanding of behavior as communication and refine their approaches to fostering a supportive school environment.
Learning Intentions & Success Criteria
- Examine the Systemic Challenges Related to Student Behavior
- Participants can analyze the systemic factors that contribute to behavior challenges in schools.
- Participants can discuss and reflect on personal and collective beliefs about behavior and discipline.
- Develop Proactive Strategies for De-escalation
- Participants can identify universal strategies to reduce escalation before it occurs.
- Participants can apply proactive supports that align with student needs and nervous system regulation.
- Refine Real-Time De-escalation Techniques
- Participants can describe effective strategies to use during an escalating situation.
- Participants can differentiate between responses that escalate vs. de-escalate student behavior.
- Implement Post-Escalation Support for Students and Staff
- Participants can explain the importance of post-crisis reflection and repair in behavior support.
- Participants can identify ways to help students rebuild regulation and relationships after an incident.
