Writing #3- Putting Writing into Practice: The Crucial Process of Revision, Assessing Writing, and Powerful Summaries @ Circle

April 4 @ 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Register Here

Drawing primarily from the work found in The Writing Revolution (Hochman & Wexler, 2017) and The Writing Rope (Sedita, 2023), participants will revisit the fundamental differences between editing and revision, dig into the effectiveness of explicit revision instruction and practice, determine an effective tool and focus for assessing student writing, and finish up with powerful summary writing.

While students should be skilled at editing and revision, revision is where the magic of the writing process happens to ensure engagement of the reader within a coherent piece of writing that flows smoothly. We will examine strategies that explicitly teach students to revise work and move them toward independent critique and enhancement of their writing.

Do you find writing evaluation challenging? Often it is difficult for teachers to assess writing based on progress toward mastery of an objective. Planning, instruction, and assessment must all match to get the clearest picture of student progress. Foundational skills and composition may both require objective evaluation depending on the established goals and purpose. We will dig into these challenges as well as look at tools and tips to help you assess student performance.

For students and teachers, summary writing can feel like a struggle as it requires a culmination of all the skills addressed in this series of professional learning. Students of all ages can learn to write summaries, however the instructional approach should vary according to student foundational and compositional skill level, complexity of the text, and knowledge required for success.
